EPA's 2026 large-scale categories
EPA's updated interim guidance focuses on commercially available large-capacity approaches including thermal treatment under certain conditions, landfills and underground injection. The agency emphasizes site-specific waste characteristics, release potential, uncertainty and data quality.
Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO)
SCWO uses water above its critical point to create reaction conditions capable of oxidizing persistent organic compounds. It is being deployed and evaluated for concentrated PFAS-containing aqueous streams. Performance claims should be assessed using transparent analytical methods, mass balance and byproduct data.
Electrochemical oxidation
Electrochemical processes use electrode-driven reactions to transform or destroy PFAS in suitable liquid streams. EPA research has identified electrochemical oxidation among promising approaches requiring continued performance and byproduct evaluation.
Other emerging pathways
Mechanochemical degradation, pyrolysis/gasification and thermal-plasma approaches are among the methods under research or demonstration. Technology readiness varies substantially by matrix, concentration and scale.
How to evaluate destruction claims
- Target PFAS plus non-target fluorine balance where appropriate.
- Transformation products and products of incomplete destruction.
- Air, liquid and solid residuals.
- Energy intensity, throughput and feed limitations.
- Independent validation and full-scale operating data.
